Why Your AI Writing Feels Off (and How to Fix It)

Everyone says ChatGPT is powerful. And sure, it’s smart—like, "top-of-the-class, math-competition-winning" smart. But if you’ve tried it for creative writing, it feels underwhelming. Like a robot trying to be poetic: not exactly Shakespeare.

Turns out, the problem isn’t ChatGPT. It’s how you talk to it. The key? Great prompts. The better the instructions you give, the better the output you’ll get.

Even Nathan Barry - founder of Kit (formerly Convertkit) and the creator economy 🐐 - says this:

"Straight out of the box, AI for writing is garbage. You have to really guide it. So take some of your best writing and ask it to create a style guide based on it."

We took Nathan’s advice and ran with it. We created style guides for different types of writing and used them to build 8 custom GPTs. Each one specializes in a different task, like a highly trained team of content ninjas.

I mean just look at this transformation:

How to use our GPTs?

These are available to you in your ChatGPT - you don't even need a paid account. Just use the links below to access these custom GPTs in your ChatGPT account:

  1. Social media posts (witty) - Converts drafts into a casually witty social media post
  2. Social media posts (punchy) - Converts a draft into a punchy social media post
  3. Social media posts (light humour) - Sprinkles light humour onto your draft social media post
  4. Social media posts (informal) - Gives your writing that “just-texted-a-friend” vibe.
  5. Podcast transcript cleaner - Turns messy podcast transcript from Descript into a readable Q&A format
  6. Perfect podcast title - Generates snappy podcast titles that make people click.
  7. Perfect article title - Suggests an impactful title for your blog or newsletter
  8. Key takeaway post - Writes a "key takeaway" blog post from a given transcript

Honestly, using these feels like hiring a content team overnight. You’ll wonder how you ever lived without them.

Wanna create your own custom GPTs?

Here's the playbook:

  1. Collect samples of your best writing. (No pressure—just your greatest hits.)
  2. Include at least one input/output pair showing the transformation you’re aiming for.
  3. Ask ChatGPT's O1 model to extract patterns for this transformation (you'll need ChatGPT Plus for this). It's important to use the O1 model here because it has the best analytical thinking capabilities. Here's my prompt:
i want you to help me create the instructions for an ai system that is responsible for finding the perfect title of an article. i'll give you sample input/outputs and you need to analyse it to extract patterns to create instructions. these instructions will be used by another ai system (custom GPT) to do the input → output transformations.

input 1:

....

output 1:

---

input 2:

...
  1. O1 will give you a comprehensive set of instructions now. Copy them and use them as the instruction to create a custom GPT (you'll need ChatGPT Plus for this).

That’s it! Soon, you’ll have your own content-generating sidekick tailored to your voice. And who doesn’t want that?
